Three Nursery Design and Safety Tips

August 11, 2020 By Stacey Leave a Comment

A nursery has to be a safe place for your baby. You may want to design it with the best of products and vibrant of colors. But no design element or baby item must compromise the safety of the space.

You can hire the best nursery designer or even become one yourself. But you will need to know what is safe and what shouldn’t be inside the nursery. Oftentimes; parents can make design blunders as an item or a feature may look harmless. So, access to correct information is helpful.

Here are three design and safety tips for your benefit.

Buy a stable and sturdy crib

The crib is the single most important item to place in the nursery. You also need to spend considerable time in selecting the right crib for your baby.

The crib must be made from safe and sturdy materials. Check it for balance before you purchase it. The slats mustn’t be too far apart; otherwise, your baby could slip out of the crib. You can buy a standard crib, a multipurpose crib, or a convertible crib as per your needs.

When opting for multipurpose or convertible cribs, ensure that the item is sufficiently stable. The drawers or the dresser in multipurpose cribs mustn’t have features that may look good but may pose a risk to your child. These can be sharp knobs or ridged features. If you are not sure of the design, opt for custom-built cribs.

Bonus tip – Place the crib away from the window. Babies can pull at the curtains. The window frame may fall on the crib. So, keep the safety feature in mind for crib placement.

Pay special attention to the bedding

Inappropriate bedding can be hazardous for babies. Choose safety over cute when buying bedding for the crib. Choose a firm mattress that fits snugly in the crib. If it can shift from its place easily with the baby’s movements then it can pose a threat to your little one’s safety. Ensure that you tug the mattress well so that your baby doesn’t slip between the bedding and the crib.

The blanket must of the material that won’t easily entangle around the baby. Only place the comforter or the blanket inside the crib if your baby needs it. It is best to dress your child in warm and comfortable clothes to avoid using a blanket at when you are not around the nursery.

Bonus tip – Keep the crib free of toys during times you can’t be around the baby. Of course, you will want to buy stuffed toys and rattles for your child. But these items mustn’t be around babies when they are unsupervised. Stuffed toys around the baby in the crib can be suffocating for the little one. Other toys can be choking hazards.

Keep the nursery clutter-free and well-lit

Refrain from cramming the nursery with too many items. The nursery must be a space free of and clutter offers unrestricted movement. Buy the stuff that is essential for the nursery.

If the space in the nursery is rather limited; choose multipurpose cribs with a changing table and drawers. It will be functional and will help you utilize the space well.

Avoid too many bulky items in the nursery. If you are placing an armoire in the nursery, do so in a way that it is at a good distance from the crib. Buy really solid armoires or other items such as tables. It is best to spend money on buying safe furniture that won’t fall at the slightest of touch.

Use fuss-free curtains without too many embellishments. If you need a lamp in the room then buy one without a glass top. Place it in a way that will be out of reach of the baby. When the baby begins to crawl, it is best to remove lamps from the nursery. In any case, it is better to use accent and ambient lights high up on the walls.

Bonus tip – Ensure there is ample natural light in the nursery. If the room doesn’t get any natural light then use a combination of accent and ambient lighting to keep the space well-lit. A well-ventilated room is also ideal for babies.
